CHANCELLOR HOUSE

FERRIERASDORP, JOHANNESBURG

In Collaboration with HMJ Prins Architect

2009

Run by Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, South Africa’s first black-run legal practice significantly contributed to the country’s political history. Theirs is a story of transcendence, audacity, resistance and hope. As an historic neighbour to the existing Magistrates Court, the conceptual redevelopment of Chancellor House presented an opportunity for a space of civic engagement. The role of Chancellor House would become a supportive platform to the democratic engines of the court, for which the lawyers so tirelessly fought. Supported by a permeable ground plane, the story is told through a narrative street level exhibition façade,
