The iconic Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg is a national heritage site and is testament to South Africa’s tumultuous road to democracy. This is evident through the numerous structures of surveillance, incarceration and oppression it once housed. Re-imagined as a site of triumph and a custodian of our democracy, a development plan sought to unlock the market potential of the site to ensure its survival and sustainability. The sacred heritage relics generated the proposed design guidelines, creating a spatial experience that threads a narrative particular to this site.
