Master Class: Informal Architecture
Goethe Institute Masterclass
June – September 2009
In collaboration with Shift and 26'10 south Architects
The Informal Architecture Master Class sought to explore housing alternatives for the settlement of Diepsloot, located 30km north of Johannesburg. Teams of varying disciplines work-shopped ideas that took existing housing policies, typologies and the existing realities of Diepsloot into account. The idea of a communal yard – a recurrent architectural element in the neighbourhood - was adapted to enable growth, sharing of public space and adaptability. A dynamic perimeter block is explored as a response to the active street edge, existing yard typology and rapid incremental change found in the area.
