Yeoville Recreation Centre
City of Johannesburg, JDA
October 2008 – May 2010
In collaboration with: Nsika Architects
The Recreation Centre forms part of a rich cluster of civic and public amenities for the vibrant Yeoville community. The different ownership of the centre and adjacent park resulted in a conflict, which required a design solution which would blur these thresholds. Focusing on increasing the public presence, this deliberate strategy sought to establish the centre’s public foyer as an extension of the park. The previously fenced boundary edge is re-interpreted through the extension of the park into the building footprint. Culminating in a courtyard, this insertion together with a large wrapping concrete canopy serves as mediating devices between these otherwise divided parts.
