For better or worse, land in South Africa has been instrumental in providing opportunity for growth and security. It has had dramatic consequence in townships where regressive land policy constrains much needed growth. Through 10 case studies including taverns, educares, houses and high streets, the research illustrates the innovative maneuvers made by owners to circumvent policy and claim a right to a livelihood. These investments and how they work are critical in narrowing the gap on how to unlock land constraints to allow for growth in marginalized neighbourhoods.
